Grand Valley Audubon Board Meeting Minutes

October 5, 2009

Present: Karen Levad, Nancy Spangler, Meredith Swett-Walker, Bob Wilson, Frank Coons, Larry Collins, Cary Atwood

Item 1:  Sewer District Project Overview~ Justin Vensel & Brett Gillory City of Grand Junction

History:  Sewer district formed to eliminate septic system failures beginning in the 70’s & 80’s.  City of Grand Junction is facilitator for sewer districts under the auspices of the Persigo Treatment Plant.  Persigo funds 30% of cost of elimination of septic systems.  Originally the Canary Lane/Red Mesa Heights Sewer Improvement District was voted down by residents in that area.  There must be a 51% vote or more to create a district and proceed with improvements.

Currently:  Neighborhood meetings which would outline the plans, bid costs and vote are to be held sometime before the end of 2009.. If all goes as planned and the district is formed per vote, the construction time period would be Jan-April 2010.  The estimated assessment fee per resident is between $6000. 00-8000.00, with an additional tap fee cost of $2700.00-3100.00 if you choose to tap into the sewer system

GVAS Concerns: tree roots buckling the bike path creating liability for GVAS, as well as how many large trees would have to be removed for location of the line.

Motion made and accepted by board to accept proposal for Canary Lane sewer improvement projects.  Bob and Bennet will pursue answers to other questions, as well as assess the environmental impact of the line upon the sanctuary property. We will be kept aware of Canary Lane public meetings when scheduled so we can attend and give input

Item 2:  New Officer appointments

Vice President:  Extend an invitation to Bennett Boeschenstein to accept this nomination

Secretary:  Cary Atwood

Item 3: Citizen Science Coordinator

Due to work and family commitments, Meredith is stepping down as coordinator.  Recommendations were made to form/ask a core group of individuals who would be interested in carrying on the Screech Owl data collection.

Perhaps a re-definition and or expansion of the citizen science idea is needed for the chapter in order to attract interested individuals.

Item 4: Approval of Minutes from last Board Meeting
