Haggerty's Hikes in a Bottle

Local author and Grand Junction Daily Sentinel outdoor columnist Bill Haggerty has finally published a collection of his famous – or infamous – hiking columns in a clever, useful format. What's more, all proceeds will support the non-profit Western Colorado Botanical Gardens.

Published jointly by H3J Publications, Pyramid Printing, and Gene Taylor's Sporting Goods, “Haggerty's Hikes” features 52 hiking columns – a hike a week for a year – from Colorado's Continental Divide west to the slot canyons of southeastern Utah.

Each hike is listed on a separate sheet of tough, semi-waterproof paper and gathered on a small carabiner clip. The collection is rolled up inside a high-quality water bottle.

“Once this Genie pops out of the bottle,” Haggerty said, “you'll never want to put it back. Simply flip through and pick a destination, fill the water bottle, and take a hike! Don't tote the whole book,” he suggested. “Leave it at home, hanging on the carabiner from the refrigerator or prominently displayed in the bookshelf with your other favorite hiking books.”

The full-color collection is cross-referenced for seasonal use, distance from Grand Junction, length of hike and degree of difficulty. Each hike features a locater map drawn by award-winning Daily Sentinel graphic artist Robert Garcia, and a photograph of what you'll find once you begin exploring.

Some hikes follow the Colorado Riverfront Trail, which is handicap accessible and a picturesque, yet easy stroll for everyone. Other selections feature strenuous climbs through the rugged Colorado Rockies or the twisting, winding canyons of southeast Utah.

No matter which direction you travel from Grand Junction, there's a hike for everyone. Best of all, proceeds from your $19.95 donation will fund a new Executive Director's position at the Western Colorado Botanical Gardens.

“I love the Botanical Gardens,” Haggerty said, “and I wanted to do something to help the gardens really grow. I hope this helps.”

Order your copies by calling the Western Colorado Botanical Gardens at 970-245-9030, or by visiting the Gift Shop between 10 a.m. And 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, or by sending an e-mail to: wcbotanic@gvii.net . They'll also be available at Gene Taylors Sporting Goods, 445 W. Gunnison, 13 Photography, 354 Main Street, Grand Junction, and Gift Baskets Galore in the Cottonwood Plaza, 2493 Hwy 6 & 50.
